I was saddened by the recent news of a woman from South Yorkshire who died of rabies after being scratched by a stray dog while on holiday in Morocco. This heartbreaking case is a stark reminder that rabies is still very real—and deadly—in many parts of the world.

The traveller was scratched by a stray puppy in February and didn’t seek medical help, believing the injury was minor. Weeks later, she developed symptoms—and tragically, by that stage, it was too late for treatment.
This is the first rabies death in the UK in several years, and sadly, it was entirely preventable.
